The Korean Fruit Exporters Capitalizing On The Global K-Fruit Craze

By Wonbin Park | November 14, 2024

To meet the growing international demand for Korean fruits, growers and exporters are leveraging smart, tailored logistics solutions to ensure their premium produce reaches customers in perfect condition.

  • Korean fresh fruits are known for depth of flavor and excellent quality, making them one of South Korea’s most popular exports.
  • As Korean producers target consumers in overseas markets, the country is becoming a leading exporter of agricultural products.
  • As perishable items, Korean fruits need to be delivered under special, temperature-controlled conditions to retain top quality when it reaches customers.

In today’s global marketplace, the demand for fresh, high-quality produce has never been greater. Among the stars in the world of fruits are Korean fruits, also known as K-fruits.

Renowned for its exceptional flavor and quality, this growing segment has been garnering increasing interest from overseas markets. The export of K-fruits such as pears, strawberries, and Shine Muscat grapes, has been particularly successful in Asian markets like Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore.

International customers developing a sweet spot for K-fruits

According to the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, last year’s strawberry exports reached USD 71.1 million, marking a 21.2% increase over the previous year. Similarly, grape exports soared by 34.6% to USD 46.1 million, both achieving all-time highs.

Gyeongsangbuk-do is one of Korea’s leading fruit-producing regions, famous for cultivating specialties like strawberries, grapes, and Korean melons. In 2023, the Gyeongsangbuk-do province achieved an all-time high export value of USD 933.1 million.

To meet rising demand, FedEx has developed customized logistics solutions that ensure these perishable shipments arrive in pristine condition at various overseas markets. In June 2024, FedEx launched a same-day fruit delivery service enabling the delivery of fruits harvested in Gyeongsangbuk-do to Hong Kong within the same day via the FedEx Gateway at Incheon International Airport.

Among the many markets that have developed a taste for Korean fruits, Hong Kong, the largest export destination for Korean strawberries, was selected as the starting point for this new service.

Making same-day fruit delivery happen

So: what does it take to set up a new perishable goods route linking growers with customers? Here’s how FedEx manages this intricate process.

Step 1: Implementing customized logistics solutions for perishable shipments

Shipping fresh fruits is no small feat. These delicate items require meticulous handling and precise conditions to maintain their quality - from the moment they leave the farm until they reach consumers’ hands. FedEx has embraced this challenge with a suite of logistics solutions tailored specifically for fresh fruits.
1. Temperature-Controlled Transportation

We utilize state-of-the-art temperature-controlled transport vehicles and packaging solutions to ensure that fruits are kept at optimal temperatures throughout their journey.

When reaching the airport, the fruits are loaded into ventilated ULDs (Unit Loading Devices) and secured with protective covers. If necessary, they can be kept in a cold chain storage at the FedEx Incheon Gateway before loading onto a FedEx air freighter to maintain temperature and quality.
2. Priority Offloading

This is crucial for preventing spoilage and maintaining freshness. Upon arrival at their destination, the fruits are prioritized for offloading to preserve their freshness and quality.

3. Real-Time Monitoring

With advanced tracking technology like our FedEx Surround® monitoring and intervention solution, we can monitor the location, temperature and even humidity levels of shipments in real-time, 24/7. Any deviations from the required conditions can be addressed immediately to safeguard quality.

4. Expedited Shipping

Understanding the time-sensitive nature of perishable goods, FedEx offers expedited shipping options like International Priority® Freight to minimize transit times. This makes sure that Korean apples, pears and strawberries reach their destination quickly, preserving their taste and texture.

Step 2: Assembling a dedicated team of experts

Behind the successful transportation of Korean fruits is a dedicated team of FedEx logistics experts who specialize in handling perishable shipments. Their experience and knowledge play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity of our deliveries.
1. Expert Handling

FedEx has a specialized team trained in best practices for handling fruits, from packing to loading and unloading. They understand the specific needs of different types of fruits, ensuring they are treated with care at every stage.

2. Customs and Compliance

Navigating international shipping regulations can be complex, especially for perishable goods. We work closely with customs authorities to ensure all regulations are met, minimizing delays and ensuring a smooth transit.

3. Collaboration with Growers

By maintaining strong relationships with Korean fruit growers and exporters, we can achieve direct communication and coordination. This helps when planning shipments according to harvest schedules, ensuring that only the freshest fruits are shipped.

The efficient shipping of fresh Korean fruits has a significant impact on global markets. Consumers benefit from direct access to high-quality produce that might otherwise be difficult to obtain. Additionally, local retailers can offer a wider variety of fruits, enhancing their product offering and attracting more customers.

Boosting local economies and driving cross-border trade

The global popularity of K-fruits creates new economic opportunities for domestic agriculture, positioning Korea as a leading exporter of fresh agricultural products.

Our commitment to providing customized logistics solutions for perishable shipments, coupled with a dedicated team of experts, ensures that fresh Korean fruits make their journey to overseas markets safely and on-time.

As demand for quality produce continues to rise, we continue to help our customers deliver fresh agricultural produce, as well as seafood and meats from the US and South America to Korea through the FedEx Incheon Gateway.

With our global network, expertise and innovation, we’re working to redefine the perishable shipping industry. With the right logistics, even the most delicate cargo can take flight.
